Controlled Waviness Tools
In lathing of contact lenses, any geometrical errors on the diamond tool cutting edge will be directly copied onto the surface of contact lens. Therefore, it's highly recommended to use Con-trolled Waviness Tools. Waviness means any deviation of an actual cutting edge from its ideal circle, which is usually measured by the maximum peak to valley height of the actual cutting edge. For 2-axis machining it is important to keep the waviness value < 0.25μm or at least < 0.5μm, depending on the vibration situation of the lathe used. At STI/Custom Craft, with our precision technology and skilled tool technicians we can make our tools' controlled waviness in the range of 0.10-0.20μm.


Rough Cutting and Semi- Roughing Tools
It is common practices to use "Non Controlled Waviness" tools in roughing and semi-roughing cutting operations since Controlled Waviness Tools are expensive to manufacture. To reduce cost while still maintaining high quality in cutting tool, we offer multiple tool options to our customers for roughing and semi-roughing operations, natural diamond, synthetic HPHT diamond, CVD diamond, and PCD. As natural and HPHT mono diamonds have become more expensive in recent years, many labs often use PCD (polycrystalline diamond) tools in their rough and semi-rough cut-ting. However, PCD tool is made of diamond powders sintering with cobalt at high temperature and high pressure; it is not pure diamond and doesn’t produce high quality surface finish on contact lens, controlled waviness tools are needed in finish cutting. The better surface finishes obtained from roughing and semi-roughing cut-ting, the better quality you may get from finish cutting and also longer tool life for the Controlled Waviness Tools. STI/Custom Craft offers a new type of lab grown diamond, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond made in our own lab. This type of CVD diamond tool is not sintered with cobalt; it’s 100% pure diamond with fine crystal grains. It offers much better surface finish on con-tact lens than PCD tools and longer tool life. How-ever, the cost is much less than natural and HPHT diamonds.
